More and more women are turning to alternative treatments for the aches and pains associated with pregnancy. This is largely thanks to a growing knowledge base, which tells us that alternative treatments are safer, for you and your baby.

Pregnancy massage is one of those types of treatment, and if you are interested in practicing home pregnancy massage, then there are a few things you should know before hand.

Speak to Your Doctor before Practicing Pregnancy Massage

There are specific conditions that you may have while pregnant, that make some or all forms of home massage dangerous or unsafe. If you’re considering making pregnancy massage a part of your ante natal treatment, make sure that you speak to your doctor first, and rule out all of those conditions first. It is always best to be safe, rather than sorry, and while home massage during pregnancy is usually perfectly safe, you need to be sure before you start!

Learn Proper Pregnancy Massage Techniques

Pregnancy massage is not as simple as it is at other times. There are certain areas of your body that should be massaged in certain ways and specific techniques that should, and should not be used.

There are online courses, as well as real world training programs, that can help you to practice pregnancy massage safely, and with maximum benefit to you and your baby, and it is always a good idea to make sure that you know what you are doing before you incorporate it into your pregnancy routine.

Get the Right Pregnancy Massage Equipment

If you are planning to make home massage a part of your pregnancy routine, then there are specific types of equipment and materials that can be useful. Heating and cooling pads, pregnancy safe massage oils and lotions; a firm and stable massage surface and other items are all things that you might like to consider. There are, of course, also many items that you probably already own that can be incorporated into pregnancy massage, and it need not be an expensive or difficult process.

LetYour Partner Give you a Pregnancy Massage

During the early stages of your pregnancy, it may be possible to practice pregnancy massage techniques yourself, however, as you progress through your pregnancy, that will become more difficult. Enlist your partner’s help to massage your back, abdomen, and other areas of your body that you cannot reach. Not only does this make pregnancy massage easier, and more comfortable, but it allows your partner to become involved in the process of pregnancy, on a physical level.

Pregnancy massage is a great form of relaxation and therapy, as well as an effective treatment for many aches and pains, and it is a good idea to include it in your pregnancy routine from early on. Make sure that you do so safely, and that you stop if you notice any adverse or worrying effects and it should be a great way to relax and enjoy your pregnancy more.

Infertility is a global public health concern and affects approximately 10% – 15% of couples worldwide. This condition may stem from numerous anomalies in the body, ranging from infections and cysts in the ovaries and reproductive tract, to the disproportionate secretion of hormones by the glands. Infertility treatments are many, and are of various kinds. The best way to tackle it is to identify the exact cause of this condition and then alleviate it.

Available infertility treatments include:

. Treating APA’s. APA’s cause blood clots and prevent implantation. A low dose aspirin therapy works wonders when treating APA’s in the blood. For graver cases, anticoagulants are used to thin out the blood and improve blood circulation in the uterus.

. Removing natural killer cells. Natural killer cells present in excess begin to attack the embryo. An intravenous treatment of gamma globulin, intralipid infusions and steroids are often used in this case.

. Treating Antinuclear Antibodies (AA’s). Abundance of antinuclear antibodies in the body is treated with steroids, intake of herbs that increase circulation, intake of antioxidants, zinc supplements, alkaline generating food and reducing the levels of stress. Balancing the responses of the immune system is the key to treating AA’s.

. Treating antisperm antibodies. To suppress the reactions in the body caused by antisperm antibodies interacting with the sperm, low doses of steroids are often made use of.

. Treating age related infertility. Since age is a possible threat to female fertility, infertility treatments involving care of the kidneys and the spleen will help a woman keep the age related problems of pregnancy at bay.

. Treating infections that hinder pregnancy. Antibiotic treatments to exterminate the harmful bacteria from the body are recommended by most doctors who conduct IVF’s. Nutritious food and immune enhancing supplements are used to prevent harmful bacteria from growing in the body. When detected in one partner, antibiotic treatments for harmful bacteria must be carried out in both partners since they are likely to have infected each other during intercourse.

. Treating the high prolactin levels in the body. Normally, to treat the elevated levels of prolactin in the body, natural remedies are suggested. These natural remedies include the intake of vitamin B, zinc and magnesium supplements, exercising, staying away from alcohol, and lowering the levels of stress. The intake of rebalancing hormones like Chasteberry, etc. is also helpful. Qi moving herbs are also quite helpful in these cases.

. Treating leutal phase defects. In case of dealing with leutal phase defects, fertility drugs like Clomid, etc. are prescribed for boosting the levels of progesterone, which enable pregnancy. However, medicines such as these are bound to have side effects, and to avoid these said side effects, it is always beneficial to opt for natural methods of treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers good help in these cases.

. Treating tubal blockages. Laparoscopy is performed to remove small areas of blockage, however if that fails, In Vitro Fertilization is an option.

. Treating sperm problems. Fertility drugs are available that enhance sperm production, and improve motility. Since sperm motility is one of the major factors affecting pregnancy, treatments in males are incomplete without looking into this.

Infertility treatments are possible with the whole new range of medicines that is available to the public these days, but it must also be kept in mind that these treatments can be painful, often come without harmful side effects and the results are far from guaranteed. On the other hand, following the holistic approach with a healthy diet, regular exercise, abstinence from alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, stress management, acupuncture etc. can almost guarantee positive and fast results.

New mothers and fathers and even experienced parents with several kids, often find that their little baby may not be sleeping as well as he or she should. Many parents look for the underlying cause of the problem, hoping to find a simple answer. This also leaves some parents questioning if feeding could have something to do with the problem.

The intent of this article is to investigate further into the different aspects of feeding your small baby and examine the effects that feeding could perhaps have on a baby’s sleeping routine and habits.

First, we should list the particular feeding areas that we will be discussing.

These are:

Mixing Breast-feeding and Bottle Feedings

Feeding your baby to sleep

What are YOU eating and can it affect your baby’s sleeping pattern?

Can solids help your baby sleep?

Mixing Breast-feeding and Bottle Feedings

It is believed that a mixture of bottle and breast in feedings could potentially lead to sleeping problems. There are a couple of different reasons for this when you are breast feeding your little baby. With each feeding, the breast is signaling to the brain that more milk needs to be produced for the following feeding. When a bottle is incorporated into feedings, this process could be interfered with. The breast will start to produce less milk due to the less frequent breast feedings.

Also, during the times when you do breast feed your baby, he or she will not get as full with the breast-feeding because of the lessening of milk supply. Therefore your baby will require feeding more frequently which will mean his or her sleep patterns will be interrupted by the need for feeding.

Feeding your baby to sleep

Feeding your child until he or she goes to sleep may be creating a problem with their sleep patterns. Your baby will soon begin to recognize that you feed him or her at bedtime. This will become something they depend on and expect. Normally, this will be the situation with each waking throughout the night as well.

There are of course, techniques you can use to stop your baby from depending on feedings to fall asleep.

Firstly, change the time or the amount of time you feed your baby when nearing his or her bedtime. Doing so will gradually remove the association of bedtime with feeding.

Another option is to feed your child earlier in the evening instead of as a bedtime routine. When you do these things your baby will not associate feeding with bedtime. This will help your baby to learn to fall asleep on his or her own accord.

What are YOU eating and can it affect your baby’s sleeping pattern?

The answer quite simply is yes. As a breast-feeding mom, everything that you drink or eat will affect your breast milk. If you do not eat the correct amount of foods and calories daily, your breast milk is greatly affected. It is important that you eat the recommended three meals daily and maybe a few snacks in between. Your milk needs to have adequate calories in it in order for your baby to feel nicely full and satisfied. If it does not, he or she will continue to feed longer until full.

You need to eat healthier foods and eat them more regularly, as well as having plenty to drink throughout the day. This will help your milk supply, thus helping your baby and his or her sleep patterns. The fuller your baby feels the better he or she will sleep.

Will solids help your baby to sleep?

Many people believe this will help, but studies have not associated any change in babies who were fed by the breast and or bottle and those who are fed solids. This has not been proven to help the baby to sleep at all. Generally, Doctors do not recommend adding solid foods prior to six months of age.

Most moms to be know that when it comes to pregnancy relief from symptoms, it is not as easy as simply going to the drugstore, and taking some pills. Many medications are unsafe for expectant mothers, but what do you do if you need pregnancy relief?

The answer, for many moms to be, is to look for alternative remedies for pregnancy relief. In this article, we look at what some of those alternatives are, and what you need to know.

Herbal Remedies

A great choice, for many women seeking pregnancy relief, is to turn to herbal remedies. Many herbal remedies, such as valerian root (which is used as a sleep aid and mild sedative) are considered safe for use during pregnancy. However, while many herbal remedies are considered safe, there are also those that are not. Make sure that you consult an herbalist before trying any herbal preparation during pregnancy!

Meditation

Many expectant mothers find that relaxation techniques, like meditation, help to relieve stress and anxiety, and as a result, help to lessen the symptoms associated with pregnancy. Just taking quiet time, to relax and do nothing, is sometimes all you need to recharge your batteries – especially when you are pregnant!

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, an ancient form of Chinese medicine that uses needles placed on specific meridians in the body, is generally considered safe for pregnant women, when practiced by a trained acupuncturist. This type of treatment can be used to treat pain and many of the other problems that women seek pregnancy relief for, but it can also be dangerous if done incorrectly. Only ever, have acupuncture done during pregnancy by a trained professional!

Massage

Massage during pregnancy can bring all sorts of pregnancy relief, from treating backache to helping with relaxation. Done correctly, it can also help to relieve headaches, fatigue, swelling, constipation and stretch marks, as well as other symptoms associated with pregnancy. Massage is one of the safest alternative treatments for pregnancy relief to try at home, provided you know the correct massage techniques.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, using either warm or cold water or compresses, has been used successfully to treat a variety of pregnancy related aches and pains, and to provide general pregnancy relief. It is often used in conjunction with massage, and it is usually easy and safe to try at home.

No matter which of these alternative treatments for pregnancy relief you choose, they are generally safe, and beneficial, when done correctly. They are also all relaxing and soothing additions to your pregnancy routine, and can be used even if you are not suffering from a particular complaint.

Always remember, however, that when you are pregnant, any illness or ailment you might have should be referred to your doctor, as treatment is often more complex and difficult than it would be otherwise. Your doctor should be able to advise you whether you need conventional medical treatment, or whether one of the alternatives listed here will suffice for pregnancy relief.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is the largest known cause of death in children under the age of one. This terrifying syndrome occurs while the baby is sleeping. To date there is no known cure, or reason for that matter, as to why some children are affected while others aren’t. But the simple fact is that over 2,500 babies die in the US each year from SIDS. Although the number of deaths have been lowered by around 40% by taking several preventative approaches and incorporating baby sleep safety methods to safe guard children from SIDS, there is no known way to fully avoid the occurrence of SIDS.

Baby Sleep Safety Tips

Here are some tips that can help to reduce the risk of SIDS:

*Lay baby on his or her back. SIDS has been closely linked to children sleeping on their tummies.

*Use a firm mattress. Avoid fluffy toys or pillows that may cause suffocation.

*Don’t let baby get over heated during the night. Babies have a higher body temperature than we do and don’t require as many blankets – Don’t let baby freeze either though!

*Don’t smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs before or after baby’s birth. Cigarette smoke is a known contributor to SIDS.

*Participate in early and parental care clinics, especially if you are a first time parent.

*Breast feed baby if at all possible. Babies that are breast-fed are statistically less likely to die from SIDS.

*Offer your baby a pacifier during the first year of life. It is not known why but babies that are given pacifiers in the early stages of life are less likely to be claimed by SIDS.

*Don’t sleep with baby in the same bed or let baby sleep in an adult bed. The baby has a greater risk of suffocation when in a bed designed for an adult. It is ok to comfort and feed baby in bed as long as he or she is returned to his or her proper bed afterward.

SIDS is unlike any other syndrome or disease. Most conditions surrounding an infant’s death are diagnosed by the symptoms associated with the death. SIDS on the other hand is only given as a diagnosis once all other possibilities are ruled out.

SIDS Risk Factors

There are several specific risk factors or notable trends that can be seen in data relating to SIDS. These risks should be addressed and noted by parents that have babies in a high-risk category.

*More boys than girls die from SIDS. There is not much that can be done about this statistic, it is more of a notation.

*Smoking, drinking alcohol and drug use are believed to be among the main contributing factors to SIDS. Simply put, if you value the life of your child, refrain from using harmful drugs such as these!

*Poor parental care. Inexperienced or young parents are the highest risk. As long as a parent takes the time to get early and regular parental care checks and have the support of family and friends, there is much less risk of this occurring.

*Premature babies are at a high risk of SIDS. Premature babies are born with a disadvantage to begin with and are usually very weak and under developed. This is more a notation than a prevention.

*Mothers who are younger that 20 are at risk of having a baby die from SIDS. This can be for a variety of reasons such as inexperience or unintentional neglect.

By using the above tips and making yourself aware of the risk factors and taking baby sleep safety precautions you can reduce the likelihood of losing a child to SIDS. For parents who have lost a child to SIDS there are many wonderful support groups available to help go through the grieving process.

When you are expecting a baby, you want to make sure that the nursery is complete. You have the crib, the changing table, the dresser and the mobile, but do you have a baby monitor?

A baby monitor is an electronic device that allows you to hear your baby crying even if you are in another part of your house.

A baby monitor comes in two pieces. The transmitter, which is placed in the nursery and the receiver that is placed in whatever room you are in.

Standard baby monitors can transmit up to six hundred feet but there are some deluxe models that can transmit up to three thousand feet.

A baby monitor receiver runs on batteries (so that it can be portable and you can carry it around the house with you), while the transmitter is plugged into an outlet. Most will have back-up batteries in case of power failure.

When you are shopping for a baby monitor, it is important to test it before you buy. Most retailers understand your needs and will have no objections. You are looking for a clear sound. If you hear static, then move on to another brand. Remember you get what you pay for. It is better to spend a little more now and have the assurance that your baby’s needs won’t go unattended because you didn’t hear him or her.

As you would expect, some baby monitors are very basic whereas others have all of the possible ‘bells and whistles’. Some of the features you may wish to consider when buying a monitor are as follows:

An indicator light on the receiver that will alert you when the batteries are low and need to be changed. You don’t want to think that all is quiet in baby’s room only to find that in fact your batteries have run out.

Another light display on some monitors will allow you to see if your baby is crying without turning up the volume. There is a set of lights on the receiver. The louder your baby cries, the more lights are lit up.

If you have a large home or enjoy working in your garden, it is possible to buy multiple receivers for different areas of your home.

For those who want to monitor the baby even more closely, there are some baby monitors that have motion detectors, and even video so you can see what your baby is doing.

There are a few disadvantages to having a baby monitor. It is sometimes possible to hear conversations of nearby neighbors if they are using a cell or cordless phone. This has been a concern since the inception of cordless phones and can create a problem if you have a cordless phone in your own home also. Baby monitor companies have recognized this problem however and have developed monitors that have multiple channels. With these, all you have to do is change the channel and the problem is eliminated.

The peace of mind a parent gains from knowing that baby is sleeping happily is immeasurable. A carefully chosen baby monitor helps to give you that peace of mind wherever you are in your house.
Infertility can be defined in two ways: as inability to conceive after a year of regular sexual intercourse without contraception, or as repeated ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages or perinatal loss. Male and female specific factors account for about 30% of the infertility causes(individually);the combination of male and female causation leads to an additional 20% and the remaining 20% are caused by uncertain origins.

When one is dealing with infertility, as much as it is important to strictly follow the rules of the treatment, it is equally important to make sure that you have the correct diagnosis of the root cause of your condition. In this article you will find a broad outline, enumerating the various probable causes of infertility.

Why it is important to determine the causes.

Infertility may be caused due to a multitude of factors at a time, or it may be the result of perhaps the deviation of a certain single factor from its premeditated path. Since misdiagnosis can often lead to further fertility complications, the very first step of treating and curing infertility depends largely on indentifying the root cause right in the beginning of treatment.

The broad causes of infertility in females may be listed as follows:

• Anovulation: In females, ovulatory problems are the most common causes of infertility. The failure to ovulate may be due to a number of factors:

• Hormonal imbalance is the most frequent cause of anovulation; when the ovaries produce immature eggs, pregnancy becomes impossible.

• Women with polycystic ovaries suffer from a decreased secretion of FSH and increased secretion of LH and testosterone; therefore polycystic ovarian syndrome may lead to anovulation in women.

• Approximately 20% of the cases of infertility occur due to the malfunctioning of the hypothalamus, the gland which controls hormonal stimuli, resulting in immature eggs. The pituitary gland is responsible for the regulation of LH and FSH, and its malfunctioning produces immature eggs.

• Damage to the ovaries caused by previous surgeries, ovarian cysts, tumors and infections may lead to production of immature eggs as well.

• Premature menopause and follicular problems are also responsible for anovulation.

• Improper functioning of fallopian tubes: Viral and bacterial infections of the fallopian tubes are the primary cause of their malfunction.

Appendicitis and colitis are abdominal problems which lead to blockage of the fallopian tubes. Tubal damages may also be caused by previous surgeries, which render the tubes incapable of passing eggs. Ectopic pregnancy, which occurs within the tube, is a potential threat to life that also causes tubal damage. Congenital tubal defects are rare, but not impossible to come across as causes of infertility.

• Use of drugs: Smoking, drinking and using other drugs have been known to decrease the chances of getting pregnant.

• Problems in the Immune system: This problem includes autoimmune reactions in the body and the creation of antisperm antibodies which exterminate sperms. Natural killer cells, which when present in excess, can damage the embryo in the uterus. The antinuclear antibodies cause inflammation of the uterus when present in excess. The presence of antisperm antibodies in the female’s body kills off the sperms before they can fertilize the egg.

Although the causes of infertility are many, they are fairly easy to overcome, especially when diagnosed in the early stages. Using a holistic approach, comprising of the prescribed medicines, following a healthy diet, regular exercise, abstinence from alcohol, nicotine and other drugs, stress management, acupuncture etc. guarantees positive results. Due to the complex and multifactoral nature of infertility, the problem can be solved permanently only by dealing with it in the holistic way, which tackles all the root causes of this condition rather than focusing on specific triggering elements.

If there is one thing that scares any expectant mom, it is pregnancy pain. Even minor aches and pains are enough to send us running to the doctor, and while it’s usually nothing more than a normal part of pregnancy, we do it every time, simply because we want to make sure our baby is born healthy.

Often, however, it is possible to tell by the type of pregnancy pain, and the circumstances that surround that pain, whether it is something normal or not. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when you experience pregnancy pain:

• How severe is the pain? In most cases, if pregnancy pain is mild, it is probably just a normal part of carrying a child to term. However, if the pain you are experiencing is severe or extreme, then there is a chance it is something more serious.

• What was the onset like? In many cases, pregnancy pain that comes on slowly and gradually is just your body’s natural progression from one stage of pregnancy to another, and nothing to be overly concerned about. If, however, your pregnancy pain came on suddenly, without any warning, then it is probably a sign that something is amiss, and definitely worth a trip to the doctor!

• How does it respond to treatment? There are many treatment options for pregnancy pain. For instance, if you have backache, you might try massage. If the backache responds to massage treatment, then it is probably only a normal symptom of pregnancy. If it does not, it may be a sign of something more serious.

• Are there other symptoms? Pregnancy pain on its own, such as mild cramping, is usually not something to be overly concerned about. If it is accompanied by bleeding, nausea, dizziness or swelling, however, it could be something more serious, and you should seek emergency medical care.

• Have you been overdoing it? Many women, especially in our busy modern world, try to continue with their normal lives, working, looking after other children, socialising and more, even when pregnant. Over exerting yourself, standing too much, or just plain fatigue, can trigger the onset of pregnancy pain. Ask yourself whether you have been over exerting yourself, and try a home treatment like massage. If you have not been over doing it, and home treatment does not lessen the symptoms, then it is a good idea to visit your doctor.

Some types of pregnancy pain, like round ligament pain during pregnancy, can be excruciatingly painful, but are actually quite benign, and not harmful to you or your baby. In other cases, pain can be a symptom of something that is potentially dangerous.

It is always wise to ask yourself the questions listed in this article, but if you are still concerned, to seek a medical opinion. It is better to overreact about nothing, and feel silly about it later on, than it is to ignore a problem because you think it is nothing, only to suffer complications later on.

Make sure that you learn techniques like massage for pregnancy pain early on in your pregnancy, and that you have painkillers and safe medications on hand, but never just ignore pain. Take action, and be safe, rather than sorry.

If you thought that the early months of your pregnancy would be idyllic, and that you would sail through them in a golden glow of happiness, the reality was probably somewhat of a shock! Most women are surprised at the frequency and severity of early pregnancy pain, but while it is surprising, it is usually nothing to be overly concerned about. Here are a few symptoms of early pregnancy pain that many women experience:

• Cramping. Many women experience cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, for the first few months of their pregnancy. Gentle massage can usually soothe the problem, and it is usually caused by what is known as implantation cramps.

• Breast tenderness is another of the most common types of early pregnancy pain. In fact, breast tenderness and swelling is often one of the first symptoms that alert women to the possibility that they may be pregnant!

• Headaches, due to changes in hormone levels, are also common early pregnancy pains, as are pelvic pain, and backache.

All of these are normal, common signs of early pregnancy pain, and they are experienced by many women who are in their first trimester of pregnancy. If you are experiencing these types of symptoms, and you are unsure what to do, here is your checklist:

• Have a pregnancy test done! If you have not already confirmed that you are pregnant, then it is important that you do! These signs may be normal during pregnancy, but if you are not pregnant, they could be a sign of something more serious!

• Once your pregnancy is confirmed, try not to panic about this type of early pregnancy pain. They will usually disappear within a month or two, and you will start feeling just fine during your second trimester, if you are like most women!

• Stock up on pregnancy safe painkillers, reduce your exercise levels for a while, rest more, and learn pregnancy massage techniques. Remember that early pregnancy pain is replaced by different mid pregnancy pain, and then by late pregnancy pain, so learning to deal with aches and pains is all part of being a mom to be!

Even though early pregnancy pain is normal, you should never ignore your instincts, and if something does not feel ‘right’ or is too painful, always refer to your doctor. It may be nothing serious, but on the other hand, it might just be something that needs to be attended to. Take care of yourself, do not try to be a brave soldier, and let your partner pamper you, and you should get through early pregnancy pain without too much of a problem!

What Exactly is Infertility?

The problems with either conceiving a child, or with carrying out the pregnancy to its eventual fruitful end, fall under the definition of infertility. Infertility is the incapability of an individual to become pregnant, in case of females, or the incapability to induce pregnancy, in case of the males. The inability of an individual to carry out a pregnancy to its full term is also dubbed infertility. How does one recognize infertility? What are the signs of infertility?

Signs of infertility are not always evident. Most people go through life without knowing there is a problem with their reproductive systems, attributing failed pregnancies to providence. In fact, miscarriages are the most common indicator of infertility. Signs of infertility in women:

In women, the signs of infertility are more readily recognized as compared to men. Endometriosis causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside the uterus.

Bacterial infections may begin around the uterus and spread to other reproductive organs, resulting in infertility. Fibroids in the uterus are indicative of infertility. Tumors in the cervix often cause stenosis, or narrowing of the cervix, which is a common indicator of infertility.

Ovulating before the tenth day and after the twentieth day of one’s monthly cycle, pre-menstrual spotting, menopausal symptoms, etc. are indicative of luteal phase defect, and thus in turn are signs too.
